English football club Tottenham announced on Sunday the departure of its Italian coach Antonio Conte as part of a “mutual agreement”. The Italian arrived at Spurs on November 2, 2021 for his second experience in England following leading Chelsea between 2016 and 2018.
Conte spoke bluntly on Saturday March 18 following the 3-3 draw once morest bottom side Southampton, who scored two goals in the last thirteen minutes. The former Italy coach (2014-2016) has attacked his “selfish” players and a team that has failed to end a trophy drought that has lasted since 2008.
“The owner has been there for twenty years and they have never won anything, but why? Does the fault lie solely with the club, or with all the managers who stayed here? You find yourself an alibi, another alibi. You try to find an excuse for the players. Alright, keep doing that, finding an excuse for the players. That’s all you do! You do just that. Apologies for the players. But the players, maybe, my future, so we lost the confidence, they lost the spirit, they lost the sense of the team. Excuses. Excuses. Excuses. Try to protect them every time.”
Last season, he led Tottenham into the top 4 to qualify for the Champions League. This season, despite a wave of transfers this summer, the results have been uneven. The Spurs are 4th in the Premier League but were eliminated in the knockout stages of the Champions League by AC Milan and at the same stage of the FA Cup by Sheffield United (D2).
