English club Tottenham have announced the appointment of former Celtic Glasgow coach Ange Postecoglou as manager on a four-year contract.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy said the Australian-Greek technician would bring ‘a positive mentality and a fast, attacking style of play’ to the club, which finished eighth in the Premier League.
The 57-year-old coach, who won the treble with Celtic this season (Coupe-Championship-Coupe de la Ligue), will officially join French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris’ club on July 1.
‘He has a strong background in player development and understands the importance of the youth academy and everything that matters to our club,’ Levy continued, adding: ‘We are delighted to have Ange joining us as we are preparing for the coming season.’
The Australian-Greek replaces Italian Antonio Conte, who left the club by ‘mutual consent’ at the end of March. Conte was first replaced by his first assistant Cristian Stellini before Ryan Mason took over until the end of the season.
In their search for a new technician, the Spurs tried to hire Feyenoord manager Arne Slot and ex-Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann, without success, before setting their sights on Postecoglou.
The latter has become popular with Celtic fans, not only for restoring success to the Hoops but also for establishing an attacking style of play.
His primary mission will be to place the Spurs in the top 4 in the long term, which they were familiar with when Conte left before falling to ultimately miss European qualification.
