Specifically with the League as an interested spectator. The leader of Forza Italia has clearly said that he is aiming for Veneto, governed for fourteen years by Luca Zaia. The name of the Foreign Minister is that of Flavio Tosi, the former mayor of Verona, expelled from the Carroccio in 2015 and who landed in Forza Italia two years ago. “We want to discuss with our allies the future of the Veneto Region, each will put on the table of the debate the names that they consider strongest and most suitable to govern the Region”, said Tajani on the sidelines of the mass with Cardinal Zuppi at the Route degli scout Agesci in Verona. “We have always thought of Flavio Tosi who was an excellent health assessor for the Veneto Region and was an excellent mayor of Verona. We will evaluate together, I never want to impose anything on anyone, but I don’t want things to be imposed on me either – added the deputy prime minister – We must work and create a synthesis that is a winner for the centre-right but above all for the people of Veneto”.

And the allies? Luca Zaia, with the current rules, cannot run, due to the maximum limit of two mandates (in reality the “doge” already has three under his belt, because in 2010 the limit had not yet come into force). Last winter the League tried to change the law, but found itself up against the wall erected by FdI and Forza Italia. Yes, because in addition to Tajani, Meloni’s party cannot run again next year. The League’s attempt to change the law is useless, it has set its sights on Veneto. The reasoning in via della Scrofa is the following: why shouldn’t we govern in a Region where we came in first in the last political elections with 32%? For the Carroccio, however, Veneto is “the Piave line”, there is no discussion. If it is not Zaia again, Matteo Salvini does not intend to give up on indicating the candidate. There is still time to find a synthesis, given that the Venetians will go to the polls next year. Returning to Forza Italia, yesterday Tajani touched on the other two hot topics. First Autonomy: «No one has ever said that we want an abrogative referendum, but we will monitor the application of differentiated autonomy. Which certainly does not mean that we do not want it» he said at the Verona Arena «We at Forza Italia said that first we make the Lep, the Essential Levels of Performance, in all the regions, then we make autonomy».

Then it was the turn of the ius scholae, with the blue secretary who for the first time seems to be holding back: «We have only expressed what is our position, we have never said that» the law on citizenship «must be discussed today or tomorrow, we have a clear position: we cannot give up our identity, our thinking, also because the ius scholae would be more rigid than the current law to grant citizenship, but this has nothing to do with collusion, agreements, with the left». So, no shock in sight for the majority. Even if the opposition in September will try to schedule a discussion and a vote in Parliament to split the center-right. «I believe I have shown in my life which side I am on, but a modern center-right must gather consensus – Tajani claimed – The game is always won in the center, if we abandon the center, the center-right is destined to lose, so we must take into account what is the Italy of today and what will be the Italy of tomorrow». It remains to be seen whether these reassurances will be sufficient to calm the controversy with Fratelli d’Italia and Lega.
