Torrevieja records banks of ‘fried egg’ jellyfish

The Mastral Project platform has warned of the presence of a large number of jellyfish on the Alicante beach of Torrevieja.

  • The jellyfish that has taken over the coasts is the Cotylorhiza tuberculata, better known as the fried egg jellyfish due to its shape.

What is Project Mastral. This is a plataform which works to record and provide information regarding the climate in Torrevieja. The Mastral Project currently has seventeen weather stations spread throughout Torrevieja and other municipalities that are responsible for collecting weather information from the surrounding area, including information related to the sea and jellyfish.

  • As indicated on their website, they have been collaborating with the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) since 2015 in collecting data on precipitation, temperature and humidity in different areas of Torrevieja.

The fried egg jellyfish from Alicante. Through his X account, Mastral Project alerted of the presence of this species of jellyfish and explained that “they do not pose a risk to humans” given that contact with them “hardly produces any irritation or burning sensation.”
