Vertically active rain clouds extending north and south continue to hang over Kyushu. Over 80mm of rain per hour was observed in Miyazaki prefecture. Strict vigilance is required as the risk of landslides and river flooding increases before noon.

Dangerous vertical rain clouds over Kyushu

In Kyushu, rain clouds are likely to develop due to the warm and moist air that flows in from the south.

As of 8:00 a.m., vertical active rain clouds stretched north and south from Kagoshima Prefecture to Miyazaki Prefecture and Oita Prefecture. In Tsuno Town, Miyazaki Prefecture, 85.0 mm of heavy rain was observed in one hour until 8:00 am. Furthermore, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency’s analysis of rainfall, it was regarding 80 mm in the vicinity of Miyazaki City and regarding 90 mm in the vicinity of Takanabe Town in the hour until 7:30 am.

This active rain cloud tends to stay in place, and if it persists, the disaster risk can rise sharply.

Severe warning of landslides and river floods without moving rain clouds until before noon

In Kyushu, it is expected that vertical active rain clouds will continue to cover similar areas until before noon. In the Osumi region of Kagoshima Prefecture, the coastal areas of Miyazaki Prefecture, and the southern part of Oita Prefecture, the risk of landslides and river flooding increases over time.

The surrounding situation may change completely, so please move to an evacuation center as soon as possible before any damage occurs. Depending on the location, damage such as flooding may have already begun. If it’s dangerous to go outside, stay safe inside your home.

Act to protect yourself without hesitation Vertical evacuation is also important

As active rain clouds continue to form, the risk of disasters caused by landslides and floods may increase sharply.

Check the information regarding evacuation from the local government and try to ensure your safety as soon as possible. If it is already dangerous to evacuate, seek shelter in your home as high up as possible, away from cliffs and rivers. However, in places where debris flows are expected, it is basic to evacuate outside the dangerous area or evacuate to the upper floors of robust buildings.

Landslide disasters may occur even following the rain has abated or stopped. Signs of landslide disasters include cracks on slopes, strange sounds and smells, stoppage of spring water, and spurts of muddy water. If you see any of these signs, get off the slopes immediately.

In addition, flooding and flooding of rivers may occur following the peak of heavy rain has passed. Never go near the river even if the rain subsides.
