The Fourth Guarantee Court of Santiago accepted the request for modification of precautionary measures by former mayor Raúl Torrealba, decreeing total house arrest and national roots.
Since June 16, 2023, the historic member of Renovación Nacional – a party from which he resigned in September 2021 – was serving preventive detention in the Captain Yaber Prison Annex and left that Gendarmerie unit yesterday.
Torrealba, who led the Vitacura commune for 25 years (1996-2021), one of the richest in the country, is accused of repeated crimes of tax fraud and illicit association, within the framework of an investigation of more than two years to determine whether he embezzled public funds while in office.
The prosecutor of the North Central Prosecutor’s Office Francisco Jacir explained that there is “a recognition of the majority of the facts for which it has been formalized and, secondly, he made known new facts regarding which there was no investigation in this regard, since there was no “He was known to the Public Ministry.”
The above was denied by the accused himself when leaving the prison.
“I have not admitted crimes, I related the facts to the prosecutor,” he said.
“I clarified many issues (to the prosecutor) that the investigation has not allowed them to know yet. And this is just beginning and there is still a lot to know,” he said.
