Toronto student sues police for $1.6 million

A University of Toronto student who was subdued by officers with a conducted energy weapon while lying on the ground is now suing Toronto police for $1.6 million.

According to a summary of the facts presented in the lawsuit, Hasani O’Gilvie realized that he was being followed by a police car while going to catch the bus, last August 12, 2021, reported CTV News.

A police officer who confused the young man then aged 27 with a wanted person approached Hasani O’Gilvie, who claims to have collaborated by declining his identity.

The altercation escalated despite everything with the arrival of police reinforcements, so that the student finally found himself surrounded by three police officers who overpowered him on the ground. One of the officers would have pressed his knee and his leg on his neck, while the young man suffered a shock inflicted with an electrical energy weapon.

The scene was filmed by the body cameras of the police, mentioned the lawyer of Hasani O’Gilvie.

A note from one of the officers involved in the event and seen by CTV News shows that the police mistook the student for a suspect who was wanted.

Court proceedings are expected to begin in 2024.
