Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas lost his job on Friday and will not return next season.
The Queen City organization confirmed the departure of the principal concerned in a brief press release at noon, through President Brendan Shanahan. Dubas’ contract will end on June 30 and will not be renewed.
“I would like to thank Kyle for his unwavering dedication over the past nine seasons, including the past five as general manager. He has created a great culture within our dressing room and our staff by encouraging the club to improve year following year, he said. We wish him the best of luck and thank him for his invaluable contribution.”
Dubas’ future was the subject of much speculation starting with the elimination of the Leafs, defeated in five games by the Florida Panthers in the second round. Previously, Toronto won its first series since the spring of 2004 by defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games. The team finished the regular season ranked second in the Atlantic Division.
The 37-year-old became the 17th GM in franchise history on May 11, 2018 following the departure of Lou Lamoriello. Previously, he acted as assistant to the CEO starting in the summer of 2014.
The Leafs will further explain the case at a press conference at 3 p.m.
In addition, Shanahan and the senior management have also cleaned up within the club-school, since the head coach of the Marlies, Greg Moore, as well as his assistants AJ MacLean and John Snowden, suffered the ax.
The Ontario squad finished atop the AHL North this year, before losing in the third round to the Rochester Americans.
