Swedish tennis player Mikael Ymer, world number 51, has been suspended for 18 months for violating anti-doping rules. The 24-year-old athlete announced this on his Twitter.
Ymer said that in January last year, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) charged him with missing three out-of-competition doping tests within 12 months. In June of the same year, the athlete was acquitted by an independent tribunal, but the ITF filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
“Yesterday I learned that the CAS suspended me for 18 months, despite the fact that I have never used or been accused of using illegal substances. Having already been acquitted once and not considering that there was a third missed test, I find it unfair in their decision to try me once more and find me guilty. On top of that, I find it hard to understand why they considered an 18-month suspension from work a fair punishment, ”Imer wrote.
The tennis player earned $2.74 million in prize money during his career. Ymer is the only Swede in the ATP top 100.
