(Alliance News) – British holidaymakers are flocking to Turkey and Egypt to take advantage of favorable exchange rates, according to On The Beach Group PLC.

On The Beach said the number of bookings received for summer trips to these destinations more than doubled compared to 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic.

He attributes this in part to the fall in value of the Turkish lira and Egyptian pound once morest the pound sterling during this period.

The number of liras that can be bought for one pound has quadrupled from around TRY 8 in 2019 to TRY 34 currently.

Holidaymakers traveling to Egypt receive regarding twice as much local currency for one pound as before the virus crisis.

According to On The Beach, the surge in flight capacity has also led to a surge in demand for holidays in Turkey.

According to the tour operator, there are 1.2 million more seats on flights from the UK to Turkey this year compared to 2019.

Annual flight capacity is expected to increase by another 1.6 million seats by 2025, to a total of five million.

Heathrow Airport announced on Friday that July was its busiest month for departures to Turkey, with more than 73,000 people flying into the country.

Airline Jet2 PLC recently revealed that its flight schedule to Turkey was three times larger than in 2018.

Antalya, known for its blue waters and stunning coastline, is the most popular Turkish location among On The Beach guests, while Hurghada on the Red Sea coast tops bookings for Egypt.

Turkey is the third most booked destination by On The Beach customers for summer holidays.

The Canary Islands take first place, followed by mainland Spain.

Zoe Harris, Chief Customer Officer of On the Beach, said: “The Canary Islands are the number one destination for holidaymakers this season, closely followed by Spain.

“Spain saw a slight drop in bookings last year, but this year it is back with a noticeable increase in bookings compared to 2019.

“Destinations to watch are Turkey and Egypt.

“They climb the ladder at lightning speed.

“We expect these two destinations to continue their ascent and compete for the top spot in the Canary Islands next year.”
