Summer may be for playing, but sometimes the holidays end with a trip to the emergency room.
Some health conditions are more common during the summer months, said Dr. Christopher M. McStay, of Columbia University’s Department of Emergency Medicine, in an interview with Huffington Post. And these can most of the time be prevented, he argues.
The American media therefore asked doctors to talk regarding the most recurring problems for which people go to the emergency room during the hot season.
Here are the 7 most common ailments in summer emergency rooms:
Heat-related illnesses
Heatstroke and cases of dehydration are unsurprisingly very common.
Nausea, dizziness and headaches are some of the symptoms associated with too much sun exposure.
Drownings and swim-related injuries
The hotter it is, the more people seek out bodies of water and aquatic activities, but they don’t always exercise caution.
“We see a fair amount of swimming-related injuries, such as injuries related to jumping in water, children being unsupervised, or accidents in boats,” says the pediatrician and emergency physician at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital of St. Petersburg, Florida, Dr. Joseph Perno.
Burns and cuts
Barbecues and campfires bring their share of burns, says Christopher McStay, while injuries related to the use of kitchen knives are also on the rise.
Food poisoning and gastros
Many people go to the emergency room because of gastrointestinal problems.
Infections and illnesses associated with food ingestion generally peak during the summer season, due to high temperatures and high humidity.
“These cases often happen following a summer barbecue where the food was not cooked properly or was left too long in the heat, or when fruits and vegetables were not washed properly,” says the emergency physician at CityMD Urgent Care Walk-In Medical Clinic, Dr. Dawne Kort.
Sports injuries
Injuries sustained during a game of football, Frisbee and various other outdoor activities are very common.
Sprained wrists or ankles, as well as broken bones are seen regularly by ER doctors.
Skin irritation and insect bites
When thinking a lot of time outdoors, it is not uncommon to suffer from skin irritations due to various wild plants.
Mosquito and tick bites are also common and when there is an infection, an antibiotic should be taken.
Sun burn
Generally, you don’t need to go to the hospital because of a sunburn, but sometimes it can be necessary.
If you have blisters or if you experience nausea, headache, chills or sharp pain, it is recommended to see a doctor.
