On Tuesday at 4 p.m., Jordan Siebatcheu (26) looks in a good mood at the 2-1 test victory of his colleagues in Gstaad once morest Xamax. Because he knows: In a few hours, following a few positions in Ligue 1, he will be a Bundesliga player for the first time. That same evening he travels to Bern to pack.
The next day we go first to the hairdresser and then to Zurich, to the airport. Jordy travels to Berlin-Brandenburg on Swiss flight LX982. To sign the contract, which brings YB six million euros fixed. With bonuses, the sum can even increase to eight million euros
Five strikers was just too much
It’s a transfer that was on the horizon. At the latest when YB signed Cédric Itten, a fifth striker following Siebatcheu, Wilfried Kanga, Joël Monteiro and Jean-Pierre Nsame. The Bernese want to fully rely on Nsame once more. National player Itten has not been brought in as a bench press. The YB Technik staff sees a lot of potential in Monteiro. What remains: Siebatcheu, who can be sold at a high price as the current top scorer (22 goals), and Kanga. Whether the France-Ivorian has a future at YB is open.
Not only Fischer wanted Siebatcheu
In Berlin, Siebatcheu meets a Swiss coach: Urs Fischer. And he plays in the Europa League. It would even have been the Champions League by a fraction of a point. Union had the US-French on the radar for a long time. Which is why Siebatcheu has always trained reduced since the start of YB training on June 14 and did not participate in any of the three training games.
Fischer was not the sole force behind the transfer. Siebatcheu was at the top of all technical staff’s wish-list to replace Taiwo Awoniyi, who joined Premier League promoted Nottingham Forest for a record €20m for the Union.
Siebatcheu, the Leverkusen killer
Siebatcheu left a lasting memory in Germany: with three goals in two games, he was the decisive man in the Europa League round of 16 in February 2021 when YB eliminated Bayer Leverkusen. Such things often pay off. Sometimes even 16 months later.
