Top Rated White Wines: Consumer Tests and Rankings of Major Brands in Supermarkets

New episode of our series of consumer tests. As a reminder, every week we test products on sale in the five supermarket chains (Delhaize, Colruyt, Aldi, Lidl and Carrefour) by comparing the major brands with “white goods” or distributor brands. The final score for each product is out of 20 points: 2.5 points for the appearance of the packaging, the appearance of the product, the nutritional value and the readability of the label, and 5 points for the taste and the quality- price. This week, we are interested in white wines. No reference brand for this test, and the big brands played the game by each recommending a bottle between €5 and €10.

Appearance of the packaging: there really was something for everyone, between tradition and modernity. For the wine offered by Aldi (Pierre Marin – Coteaux de Béziers), we appreciated the modern and simple label. For Lidl (Pinot gris – wine from Alsace), on the other hand, it was as simple as the name. As for Delhaize (Les Volcans – Côtes d’Auvergne), we appreciated the design, and the reference to the Puy de Dôme. The bottle sold at Carrefour (Loire Haut Poitou – Soupçon de fruit) is for its part a magnificent bottle, very summery and which makes you want to be tasted in the sun. For the Intermarché wine (Maison Hauller – Pinot Gris), on the other hand, it is the most total tradition that takes precedence. Alsace wine lovers will undoubtedly appreciate it. Finally, the Colruyt bottle (Dordonia 24) is simple, but modern and efficient.

Our big brand test goes to rosé: the cheapest bottle is the best rated! (COMPARATIVE)

Appearance of the product: we regretted the too light nose of the Aldi wine. Conversely, but this is not necessarily a quality, the product offered by Carrefour had a very strong nose. For Delhaize and Colruyt, we loved the subtlety and the fruity side of the wines.

Nutritional value: we’ll be brief: drinking alcohol is not good for your health.

Readability of the label: the information was too brief for Colruyt and Lidl bottles. For the rest, it was very correct. A word of advice, always look for the words “bottled at the château” or “at the property”.

The big brand test: white wine on the test bench, the winner is Australian! (2022 release)

Taste: wine is a matter of tastes and colors, and opinions can vary greatly from one person to another. But when it lacks taste, we are disappointed. This is the case of Lidl wine, which was not bad but lacked taste. Conversely, the wine offered by Carrefour was very powerful. Too powerful, even for the majority of our testers. For the rest, Aldi and Delhaize hold up very well and are very versatile, which is a quality and a small flaw. Intermarché and Colruyt were a cut above. Both can hold their own with a meal no problem!

Value for money: Colruyt manages to obtain a good rating thanks to a fixed price of €4.95. In ascending order, we then find Lidl and Aldi (€5.49), Carrefour (€7.99), Intermarché (€8.55) and Delhaize (€9.99).
