Still within the framework of the “NIFFF 2023”, these last few days have allowed me to discover many Swiss and even world Premieres and Previews. A rather French summary this time, but Asia is not forgotten. Fear, phobia and fights were well placed.
Borders: In the Canadian countryside, towards the American border, the Messier sisters try as best they can to move forward following a death in their family. However, it is Diane who feels the hardest hit. She always has the feeling of being observed in her home and cannot explain why the doors of her cupboards open daily. This, without counting the escape of prisoners, the problems on his farm and the multiple tensions with his sisters and his mother, back from Florida. Will she be able to feel at peace?
Shot in the Eastern Townships region of Canada, Guy Édoin’s new production (“Ville-Marie”) is successful and rather effective. If the feeling of anxiety is not intentionally ubiquitous, “Frontières” intrigues, in particular thanks to the discovery of characters and places as the story progresses.
Headlining this feature film, Canadian actress Pascale Buissière (“When Night is Falling”) who brilliantly demonstrates multiple facets through her character “Diane”. Because the loss of loved ones happens to everyone and the emotions that may arise from it also affect many people.
If his colleagues, mostly actresses, also play in a very interesting way, the rural environment and the various external pressures, create a certain tension quickly perceptible and delectable for the public. A rather original scenario, not aimed at the youngest because of the rather violent scenes.
Mary My Dead Body : Ambitious, macho and assumed homophobic, the young policeman Ming-Han doesn’t want to realize that he greatly infuriates his colleagues. During one of his chases, he will pick up a red envelope that will change his life. On the one hand, this means that he was chosen to marry a deceased person, but in addition, the latter was a man… gay. Between the supernatural and homosexuality, everything comes together to further deteriorate his life.
If Taiwanese director Wei-Hao Cheng’s 8th production (“The Soul”) turns out to be one of my favorite fictions of this “NIFFF 2023”, it’s thanks to its original, magical, funny and … tragic.
Because this controlled mix of emotions is entirely due to its scenario which is both complex, but paradoxically, rather simple to follow thanks to its linearity. In addition, all the topics covered remain current and demonstrate many of the ills of society.
Carried by the actor duo Greg Han Su (“Un Soleil”) who plays the policeman “Wu” and Po-Hung Lin (“Transformers: Age of Extinction”) interpreter of the ghost “Mao”, their dynamic works wonderfully and will appeal to a wide audience curious to discover this kind of comedies, hiding many societal issues.
Farang: A few months before his release from prison following his good behavior, Sam will have to make a quick and drastic choice. Leave France or assume its legitimate gesture? Because 5 years his act, his past will catch up with him following the desire of his wife who wishes to acquire a small piece of land on the edge of the Thai coast. Thus, his life will change once more: work for the mafia or postpone the purchase of the plot? The wrong choice will happen quickly, unfortunately Sam will realize it too late.
If the new feature film by Xavier Gens (“Budapest”) hits hard in terms of action scenes and close combat, unfortunately, the scenario lacks ambition, realism and explanatory details. So, how was “Sam” able to leave France following his gesture?
Through “Farang”, said filmmaker completely changes the theme, in a rather successful way, but above all he signs there, a good popular action film. In addition, the fact of having shot mainly in Thailand, brings a nice added value to his fiction.
Ultimately, if “Farang” does not turn out to be the feature film of the genre of the year 2023, his ambitious film remains effective, entertains, sometimes impresses depending on the sequences (that of the elevator for example), but does not is intended neither for children nor for people sensitive to the sight of blood.
