New episode of our consumer test series. As a reminder, every week we test products on sale in the five supermarket chains (Delhaize, Colruyt, Aldi, Lidl and Carrefour) by comparing the major brands to “white products” or distributor brands. The final score for each product is out of 20 points: 2.5 points for the appearance of the packaging, the appearance of the product, the nutritional value and the readability of the label, and 5 points for the taste and the quality-ratio. price. This week, tested a seasonal product, pumpkin soup.
Appearance of the packaging: Knorr is our reference brand for this test, as was the case for the tomato soup. We found the logo and design a bit basic. For Intermarché, it was very successful and gave a very natural look to the product. For Carrefour and Colruyt, it was very similar and it was quite successful. For Delhaize, the product was well highlighted, but the white background was a little cold for this type of product. It is important to note that Aldi and Lidl only offer pumpkin soup in powder form. This will be taken into account in the quotes, obviously. For the packaging, it was quite colorful but not very modern.
The big brand test: second chance for lasagna, and more outrageous recipes!
Appearance of the product: the big brand offers something too liquid but the smell is excellent. For Intermarché, the smell was really pleasant, and the soup was very thick, like a velouté. For the Carrefour soup, it didn’t smell much and seemed quite bland. At Delhaize, it was too liquid, but the smell was okay, nothing more. For Aldi and Lidl, it was OK for powdered soup.
Nutritional value: Nutri-Score B for everyone except Aldi and Lidl, which get a C.
Readability of the label: for the big brand, there is no lack of information, there is a table, but it is a little busy. This went straight to the point and was therefore much clearer for the Intermarché brand. For Colruyt, it was quite readable, but not perfect. Aldi and Lidl are doing very well. For Carrefour it lacked a table to find information quickly, but it was readable, the same for Delhaize. It was better at Colruyt, with a very thick soup and a good smell.

Taste: the Intermarché soup was good, but a little bland all the same. For the big brand, it was a good soup, but it didn’t taste like pumpkin at all and it was very spicy. It was even more disappointing at Carrefour, with a bland and bitter soup. Another failure at Delhaize, with a soup that was way too sweet and spicy. We’re still looking for the pumpkin. It was a little better, but barely, at Colruyt. We found the taste of pumpkin, but there was a rather special followingtaste. To Aldi, it tasted like powdered soup – okay – but not pumpkin. For Lidl, it looked like hot water with spices, but no trace of pumpkin.
Value for money: the big brand is much more expensive than the competition, with a liter of soup for €3.19. For the rest, here are the prices in ascending order: Aldi and Lidl (€1.39) and Intermarché, Colruyt, Carrefour and Delhaize (€1.99).
