ANSELM – THE RUSH OF TIME

The dimensions are hard to believe: When the German art star Anselm Kiefer rides through his studio halls, he has to use a bike. The distances are so wide, the formats are so large in the 40-hectare Barjac refuge in the south of France. Fellow countryman Wim Wenders, who was also born in 1945, captures art and the artist in his creative process in the stunning 3D documentary film “Anselm – The Rushing of Time”. In addition to powerful images, Kiefer’s life path, international successes and domestic resentment are extensively traced. In addition, the audience is treated to pathetic, narrative scenes from Kiefer’s youth. Poems by Ingeborg Bachmann and co will be recited. (js)

FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY‘S

Mike (Josh Hutcherson), who has a criminal record, doesn’t want to think about supernatural powers when he is offered a night watchman job in an empty bar. Eyes shut and go for it! But be careful! The former pizzeria’s neglected animatronic mascots are not as motionless as they seem. At night they come to life. Cult villains cause a screen bloodbath under the direction of Emma Tammi. For the main character, the fight against the killer robots becomes a confrontation with a past tragedy. Formidable puppet constructions from the workshop of Muppet inventor Jim Henson bring the pixelated, morbid charm of the original into reality. Crazy slasher fun. (pog)

THE LUNCH WOMAN

The Austrian directing icon Barbara Albert (“Nordrand”, “Licht”) has opulently staged Julia Franck’s bestselling novel of the same name “The Midday Woman” for the big screen. Visually, the historical film adaptation spans a wide range from a girl with an insane mother in the East Saxon town of Bautzen at the beginning of the 20th century, through the dazzling life in the 1920s, to the wife and woman forced into the role of mother and housewife during the Nazi era. A woman and half-Jewish who initially gives up her identity and lives on under a new name – in marital hell. The film is less interested in German post-war history. All the more so for the questions of motherhood, womanhood and the female body. The ambitious Helene (furious play: Mala Emde), called “Little Angel”, and her sister Martha (Liliane Amuat) flee from the hell of their father, stranded with their aunt in Berlin and intoxicated in the middle of the “Roaring Twenties”. Where sexual freedom is at home. As we all know, the era doesn’t last forever. (js)

THE BASTARD KING

For his feature film debut, Owen Pruemm spent over ten years filming wild animals in remote regions of Africa. These images were interwoven with a fictional narrative. The story is about an outcast lion cub who becomes the dominant leader of several prides. The common enemy: man. An accompanying text is presented as a voiceover by actor Tom Wlaschiha (“Game of Thrones”). Plot similarities to “The Lion King” are no coincidence. The semi-documentary experiment doesn’t quite work out, but it impresses with virtuosic animal shots that have a brutal impact. (pog)
