In my eyes, Lane Hutson is currently the best prospect who has never played an NHL game with the Canadiens. The diminutive defenseman, who was drafted late in the second round a year ago, is an offensive powerhouse and just burned through the NCAA in his first year on the league.
15 goals and 48 points in 39 games for a rookie defenseman, that’s what I call “burning the league”, anyway.
However, even if Lane is without a doubt a very high quality prospect, he is not the only one in his family to enjoy such status: his little brother, Cole Hutson, is one of the best prospects for the next draft, and when you watch him play, he reminds us of his big brother.
Watch the following footage: Lane’s been doing this all year in the NCAA.
Watching the USNTDP once more really reminded me just how deceptive, dynamic, and creative Cole Hutson is.

Cole isn’t huge either (five-foot-eight, 143 pounds), but at 17 he still has time to grow a little. And if his bones are like Lane’s, we can expect to see him gain another inch or two.
In 2022, teams let Lane slip through their fingers, but next year they probably won’t make the same mistake with Cole. He is among the top 10 prospects for the next draft and it seems destined for a bright future.
And if the Canadiens have another tough season next year (which I expect), they may well have the opportunity to select Cole in the first round next year.
He’s another left-handed defenseman, sure, but the last time the CHs drafted a short player named Cole in the first round ended well, right? And besides, Cole Hutson already has chemistry with guys who have the same first name as him.

Next year, Cole Hutson will spend another year in the American national development program, where he will notably share the ice with Cole Eiserman, who is projected among the three best hopes of the next vintage. He’ll also eventually play for Boston University, by the way.
Just like Florian Xhekaj this year, therefore, the Canadian might have the chance to draft the brother of one of his best hopes next year. Note also that the eldest of the family, Quinn, is still a free agent, he who has just experienced a good season alongside Lane with Boston University.
And if he prefers to wait until 2027, there will be a other Hutson, while young Lars will be eligible. But hey, it’s pretty early to focus on him right now.

– I would really not be once morest the idea of seeing Jordan Spence land in Montreal.
ICYMI — I examined three NHL defense prospects that might benefit from a change of scenery.
Got some great insight from some coaches, players and scouts that I surveyed.

Voila, Lavoie ☑️
The #Oilers have agreed to terms with forward Raphael Lavoie on a one-year, two-way contract extension ($874,125 AAV). The 22-year-old led the @Condors in goals last season with 25.#LetsGoOilers pic.twitter.com/zsYzQxSEp5
