Top French Car Sales in 2023: Renault Clio Ranks First, Peugeot 208 Struggles – See the Full List Here

Unlike 2024 which promises to be a great year for new French releases, 2023 was not as rich. Which did not prevent our French from achieving good scores and remaining firmly anchored at the top of the new car sales charts. As proof, apart from an inversion between two models, we find the same first 7 models between 2022 and 2023. And, before detailing the 10 French ones that you liked the most, we must give an element of context: that of the evolution of the market, which increased by 16% between 2022 and 2023, to land at 1,774,772 units sold.

French women who sold well in 2023

At the top of this ranking, it is the Renault Clio which takes the crown, with almost 100,000 units delivered. Only third in sales two years ago, the city car from Losange seriously flexed its muscles last year (+ 52%). This success, however, owes nothing to chance and above all confirms the excellent synthesis achieved by this very versatile Clio 5, economical to use and not too expensive to purchase.

Since it shares many elements with the Clio and its performance is not very different – it even clearly gains in habitability/modularity – the Captur is also among the successes of 2023. Its sales have grown significantly less than its little sister but it is still significantly better than in 2022all without the slightest restyling!

Another good student, the Peugeot 308, whose deliveries increased by 9%. If it ranks 7th in the general hit parade, as in 2022, the Sochaux compact confirms good momentum following a timid 2021 due to industrial problems during its first year of marketing. It must be said that between very good driving pleasure and a fairly spectacular presentation, the 308 has serious advantages for the greatest number of people. A clarification: she is the only representative of the Stellantis group making clear progress in this top-10…

A little behind, we find the Renault Austral. For its first full year of marketing, the replacement for the Kadjar does not stand out by approaching 30,000 deliveries. But it’s difficult to be completely satisfied because its rival, the Peugeot 3008, despite its 6-year career, is doing even better.

Finally, the Citroën C3 stands out a bit. With a 1.2% increase in sales, we might conclude that it is status quo and not give it a place among the good results for 2023. But that would be forgetting that it still ranks third in general sales in France, despite its 7 years on the clock.. This is definitely a good performance once morest more recent competitors.

After the good students comes the case of those with more difficulty. Although it climbs to the second step of the podium, the Peugeot 208, the Clio’s great rival, is set to suffer in 2023. Its sales have in fact decreased by 3%. A slight contraction of the curve in absolute terms and still a second place in the general hit parade, but let’s remember that the Peugeot city car, sales leader in 2022, also has an electric variant of which the 22,000 examples (+ 18% VS 2022!) are obviously counted in total. Sales of thermals have therefore fallen significantly.

Another grimace at Peugeot, the 2008, which saves its fifth place (as in 2022) but sees its sales drop by 4%. Arriving late in the year, the restyling has not yet had time to reverse the trend. Even if the main problem of the 2008 strangely comes from the electric version, whose sales fell by 36%…

To complete the circle, on the upper floor, the 3008 also saw its sales drop in 2023. This time, the drop is more significant: more than 15% and an exit from the top 10, which did not happen to it very often. That said, following the insolent success, the compact SUV from Sochaux has every right to weaken at the endespecially since its replacement has already been presented and will soon be available for order.

Another model awaiting a novelty effect: the Arkana, whose deliveries have decreased by more than 6%. After almost unexpected enthusiasm at its launch, the Losange “coupe” SUV weakens a little. But thanks to a small facelift carried out this year and a price/performance ratio that is still among the best among family SUVs, we would not be surprised to see it go green once more in 2024.

Finally, at the end of this top 10, we find the Renault Mégane, whose 28,760 sales should be detailed a little. Because they in fact bring together sales of electric but also thermal versions, even if the latter only represent 6,000 copies. All energies, the Mégane will still drop by 14% in 2023. An average result that might symbolically compensate for the 13% increase in the electric variant. Except that at the same time, electric vehicles have collectively grown by 47% in 2023. With growth of “only” 13%, the M2gane is therefore not at the party. This is perhaps what led Renault to seriously lower the price of its electric compact for the start of 2024.
