Top Drivers Discuss Toyota, Rallying, and Championship Potential

Toyota? Why change?

A whole bunch of things mean that I don’t want or need to look elsewhere. I am very comfortable here. It is one of, or the, largest manufacturer(s) in the world. Having a boss who is so passionate regarding this sport and so supportive of our program. Obviously, we feel good in this team. The car performs well, we have a string of victories and titles. I don’t really see any reason to change. One of the qualities of the Japanese is their loyalty. For my part, I want to be too.

Ogier in Rally until when?

Honestly, I don’t know how to answer this question. I don’t set a limit for myself. As long as the situation works as well as this year, we are all happy to continue like this. But these are one-year contracts so there is no long-term certainty. We will take stock once more in a few months.

The “old guys” remain unbeatable?

Thanks for the compliment, already. Rallying has always been an experience sport. This is not something very new. But perhaps we come back to the lack of cars in the premier category. It’s not easy for a young person to find an opportunity now. If there is a big talent emerging, he will always find an opportunity. But that may not be the case for everyone. So if we might have a few more cars in the WRC it would make this situation a little easier.

What is Thierry Neuville missing to be champion?

If we take the facts, regularity, I would say. He often has speed. He is capable of winning on most Rallies. He makes mistakes a little too often which cost him dearly in the championship. But hey, it often doesn’t amount to much. We play on a wire. Sometimes success can go one way or another. Next year, if there are fewer and fewer competitors, those who do the full season will have even more chances. He is one of the top drivers in this championship. He has the potential. But between having the potential and doing it, that’s always the hardest part.
