Paris: Argentina legend Lionel Messi is again in the preliminary list of the Ballon d’Or award list. Meanwhile, Messi’s main rival who has won the award five times and currently Al Nasser star Cristiano Ronaldo is not in the list. This is the first time since 2003 that the star is missing from the list.
Messi, the Inter Miami star, has been brought back to the award list for his excellence in leading Argentina to the World Cup title after 36 years. Messi himself is at the forefront of the battle for the award. In the Women’s World Cup, the midfield engine Aitana Bonmati, who led Spain to the title for the first time in history, is leading the women’s division. Bonmati was named UEFA’s player of the year.
Messi’s World Cup-winning teammates Julian Alvarez, goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and Lautaro Martinez are also in the 30-man preliminary squad. Kylian Mbappe, a key force in France’s World Cup campaign, and Norway’s goal machine Erling Haaland, who gave Manchester City a season treble, are also on the list. Karim Benzema, Harry Kane, Jamal Musia, Kim Min Jae, Mohamed Salah, Vinicius Jr., Ilkay Gundogan and Robert Lewandowski are also on the preliminary list.
Alexia Putellas, who won the award twice in the women’s category, did not make the list this time. The setback was that the player missed the matches last season due to injury. The Ballon d’Or has been awarded to the best individual performance in football since 1956 by France Football magazine.
