A worldwide professional photographer, who mainly deals with sports photography, has traveled all over the world and captured top sports events, Angelos Zymaras presents the essence of his career so far, in the exhibition Defying Gravity, which opens in the premises of Hellenic German Education , in Pallini, on Wednesday, April 10 (8:00 p.m.)

ANGELOS ZYMARA’S CLICKS

An exhibition that conveys important competitive moments, the pulse of the athletes at the time of “battle”, capturing the right moment, their anxiety, longing, the joy of victory, but also the crying of emotion, or even disappointment, when the goal was not achieved.

Angelos Zimaras lived in London for fifteen years. Today, based in Thessaloniki, he still travels around the world covering photographic Olympiads, European or world athletics championships, etc. Through photography, Angelos Zimaras aims to communicate to students and the public the idea of sportsmanship and sports as a fundamental social right. At the same time, in a turbulent time internationally, with wars in and next to Europe and Paris hosting this year’s Olympic Games, the Defying Gravity exhibition reminds us of the importance of persevering with the Olympic ideal and promoting a culture of peace, based on respect for of human rights.

“This year, the Hellenic German Education school is focusing on 2024 as the year of the Olympic Games and is presenting this specific exhibition with portraits of Greek athletes who participated or will participate in the Olympic Games, in the context of encouraging and familiarizing children with creativity and spirituality of art”, he says to “ET” Eleni Koukou, who is in charge of the exhibition. That is why the exhibition Defying Gravity is under the auspices of the National Olympic Academy and the International Olympic Truce Center.

Informing us regarding the spirit of the exhibition, Mrs. Koukou notes that it includes 40 selected photos of sports events, in which we see the athletes either at the moment they compete or the moments immediately following the effort, as well as their portraits in the preparation area. The common element that runs through all the images in the exhibition is strong emotion.

Photo exhibition dedicated to the Olympic spirit

The strongly emotional effect is primarily due to the photographer’s own approach. Angelos Zymaras has known our sportsmen and women over the years, he lives their dedication up close and watches them photographically in shocking moments of self-transcendence. He is very interested in the human and often fragile aspect of these moments. The photographer himself conveys to E.T.” two shocking moments that he managed to capture with his lens, which are for him the most moving of his career.

“I will never forget the cry of joy and relief of the great coach Giorgos Pomaski, the legendary moment when Miltos Tedoglou wins the gold medal at the World Open Athletics Championships in Budapest in the summer of 2023. With that medal, Tedoglou won all the important golds medals that exist, and his coach’s expression sums up all the extra effort that lies behind them and that is not perceived by Tedoglou’s characteristic relaxation and comfort”.

“In another photo in the exhibition we see Katerina Stefanidis, at the Rio Olympics in 2016, hugging her partner and coach, the moment she realizes she won gold in the pole vault. It was the moment of the last attempt of her American competitor, who if she passed the obstacle, Stefanidis would have been second. All the photographers covering the race were focused on the American who was the favorite. I chose instead to focus on Stefanidis because I was interested in her reaction whether she won the gold or not, capturing one of my favorite photos in a very emotional moment.”
