The “Alexandria Film Festival” revealed the results of a referendum it conducted to select the best hundred Egyptian musical films, on the sidelines of its thirty-ninth session, scheduled to be held from October 3 to October 8.

The referendum took place with the participation of regarding 32 critics and cinematographers, so the movie “Gharam in Karnak” topped the list, which was produced in 1967, starring Farida Fahmy and Mahmoud Reda, and directed by Ali Reda, while the movie “Khali Balak from Zouzou” starring Souad Hosni, Hussein Fahmy and Tahia Carioca came second. Directed by Hassan Al-Imam (production 1972), knowing that the “Red Sea Film Festival” had restored the two films and presented them during its second session; While “A Holiday for the Text of the Sunnah” by Reda Band ranked 14th in the list.

The movie “Ghazal al-Banat”, which won third place, is starring Laila Murad, Anwar Wagdi and Najib al-Rayhani, and directed by Anwar Wagdi (1949); One of the classics of Egyptian cinema.

And the movie “My Father is Above the Tree” (1969), starring Abdel Halim Hafez and Nadia Lutfi and directed by Hussein Kamal, ranked fourth, while the movie “Ice Cream in Glim” (1992), which is considered one of the icons of the nineties generation, came in fifth place, and it is one of Starring Amr Diab, Ashraf Abdel-Baqi, Jihan Fadel, and directed by Khairy Bishara.

It is noteworthy that the “black and white” films accounted for the largest percentage of the list of the best hundred lyrical films, and “The Brown Nightingale” Abdel Halim Hafez occupied the list of actors with 11 films, out of 16 films representing his cinematic credits, and Shadia topped the actresses with 9 films.

The definition of “lyrical film” sparked controversy among filmmakers, especially because there are films on the list that are far from the nature of this quality, such as “A bitter day … a sweet day”, “Cabria” and “Al-Kif”.

Regarding the classification that was used to select films, the critic Prince Abaza, head of the Alexandria Festival, commented to Asharq Al-Awsat: “We have no room for classification between musical, lyrical and performance films, because we lack the production of musical films in their global sense, so we combined them, and the selection was made from a list that includes About 800 films.

He stressed the importance of referendums for Egyptian cinema; Because it increases the audience’s interest in the types of films it has missed, emphasizes Egypt’s great cinematic history, and opens up new cinematic horizons, noting that “raising controversial results is natural, and in the end it is the result of choosing the group participating in the vote. Egyptian cinema began singing since the thirties of the last century, and the musical film received the interest of the audience.

“Scott Hansour” ranked 79th in the list (Alexandria Film Festival).

As for the critic Ashraf Gharib, he saw that the referendum lacked specific and accurate criteria for the concept of the musical film, stressing to “Al-Sharq Al-Awsat” that “some of those who participated in it dealt with the musical film according to their own perspective, without agreeing on a fixed standard, so the films differed. And you did not reap the consensus ».

He asked, “Is (Kaboria) a lyrical movie just because Ahmed Zaki performed a song during it? And does this matter apply to (how) as well?”, Stressing that the lyrical film requires that the song be an essential element in the dramatic construction of the event, or complementary to the dialogue or commenting on it.

However, this does not preclude, according to Gharib, that the referendum included important choices, including the movie “The Shahatin Strike”, which he considered a unique lyricist, praising the importance of what the “Alexandria Film Festival” is doing in terms of referendums on stagnant movement in the history of Egyptian cinema.

The films of Muhammad Abd al-Wahhab, Umm Kulthum, Farid al-Atrash and Muhammad Fawzi ranked high in the list of the 100 best musical films. Critic Zain al-Abidin Khairy, who supervised the poll, confirmed that he had conducted research on the term musical film, similar to “Moulin Rouge”, and found that it “does not exist.” In Egyptian cinema except rarely.” He also relied on a study by the Lebanese Victor Sahab, in which he considered the film, which includes 4 songs, to be a lyrical work. He revealed that the members of the referendum stipulated that the film include 3 songs, provided that they are in the context of the drama and are not involved in the events.

“Keep in mind from Zozo” is the second best musical film according to the poll (Alexandria Film Festival)

Regarding the mechanism for counting the results, Khairy explained: “We adopted two voting mechanisms: the first is the points obtained by each film from the peer vote, on the basis that the film nominated for the first place gets 50 points, the second 49, and so on… and the second, the number of times Repeat the film with colleagues. By arranging the points obtained by each film, the final list was adopted to ensure the greatest degree of objectivity.
