**Introduction**
Welcome to Archyde! Today, we have the privilege of speaking with Dr. Helen Y. Hougen, MD, about her crucial research on improving the accuracy of the 4Kscore test for Black men.
Dr.hougen, thank you for joining us.
**Dr. Hougen:**
It’s my pleasure to be here.
**Archyde:**
Your research delves into a critical issue: racial disparities in prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. Can you briefly explain the 4Kscore and why calibration for Black men is so crucial?
**Dr. Hougen:**
The 4Kscore is a blood test that helps assess a man’s risk of aggressive prostate cancer. While it’s been a valuable tool, studies have shown it may not be as accurate for Black men as it is for other racial groups. This can led to misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment decisions.
Our research focused on adding a coefficient for race to the 4Kscore algorithm. This adjustment aims to improve its accuracy for Black men and ensure they receive the most appropriate care based on their individual risk profile.
**archyde:**
That’s captivating. What were your key findings?
**Dr. Hougen:**
We found that incorporating a race coefficient significantly improved the 4Kscore’s calibration for Black men. This means it became better at accurately predicting the likelihood of aggressive prostate cancer in this population.
Accuracy is crucial because it allows men and their doctors to make informed decisions about screening, biopsies, and treatment options.
**Archyde:**
This is incredibly important progress. What are the potential implications of your research for Black men’s health?
**Dr. Hougen:**
Our findings have the potential to significantly reduce racial disparities in prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. By improving the 4Kscore’s accuracy for Black men, we can help ensure they receive timely and appropriate care, leading to better health outcomes.
**Archyde:**
