The Carrefour banner is continuing its strategy of developing initiatives in favor of its customers’ eco-gestures, including the recycling.

From this Friday, March 31, 2023, the retail brand is offering recycling kiosks in the car parks of six of its stores, including that of Athis-Mons, in Essonne, where the retail brand presented the device.

“These kiosks will give a second life to these forgotten recycling objects that we might not put in the sorting bin”, underlines Carine Kraus, director of the Carrefour group’s commitment, before symbolically cutting the ribbon. in front of the imposing container.

In return for the objects deposited, the kiosk will distribute a voucher ranging from 50 cents up to 15 euros.

What objects should be placed in these recycling kiosks?

Six families of objects can thus be deposited by customers in each kiosk: toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste; razors and blades; writing instruments; tights, stockings, knee-highs and ankle socks made of synthetic fibres; damaged toys; pots and pans.

All brands are acceptedeven if the partnership is concluded with reference partners: BIC, DIM, Hasbro, Philips and Tefal.

The products collected will then be recycled by the specialized company TerraCycle, which offers recycling solutions for waste considered “difficult to recycle”.

“Until now, these six product categories did not have a local management circuit and were therefore mostly incinerated or buried“, explains Carrefour, indicating as an example that “60% of used stoves are currently thrown away in household waste”.

Recycled plastics will be used to make new objects

“Once the containers of the kiosks are full, we will collect the pallet boxes of waste to take them to the North department. First on a first site where they will be sorted, then in our material recovery center where they will be made from recycled materials »explains Julien Tremblin, General Manager of TerraCycle Europe, presenting a soap dish made from used toothbrushes.

The plastics from tights, stockings, toys, writing instruments, razors and other toothbrushes will be crushed, washed and transformed into granules which can then be used to manufacture small objects., of flower pots, but also street furniture such as benches or finally materials for construction.

“The management and recycling of all these products will be financed by the partner brands, regardless of the origin of the manufacturer”, specifies Carrefour.

Which stores are affected?

To begin with, six stores take part in the experiment:

  • Athis-Mons (Essonne)
  • Angoulins (Charente Maritime)
  • Evreux (Eure)
  • Laval (Mayenne)
  • Nice-Lingostiere (Alpes-Maritimes)
  • Vaulx-en-Velin (Rhone)

Depending on the results, the experiment might then be generalized.

In exchange, vouchers

In exchange for their participation in this recycling operation, customers will receive vouchers, depending on their deposit.

Five pens deposited thus make it possible to recover 50 euro cents, five tights 1.50 euro, a frying pan 5 euros or even 15 euros for seven toothbrushes.

“All households have these objects at home, insists Rami Baitieh, the general manager of Carrefour France. By recovering them and giving them a second life, we solve a winning equation, both for the environment, but also for consumers, all the more so in this period of inflation”, he rejoices before slipping , in turn, objects in the kiosk.

These purchase vouchers, which can be combined, can be used at Carrefour and on products from the operation’s partner brands (BIC, DIM, Hasbro, Philips and Tefal). A minimum purchase price may be required.

To unlock their vouchers, customers simply scan the kiosk’s QR Code and let themselves be guided via l’application Recycle&Save.
