The Mauricie Regional Education Table (TREM), which is taking part in the Great Toddler Week movement, has unveiled its brand new tools intended for parents of children who will enter kindergarten shortly. The objective is to ensure the optimal development of children so that their first experiences in the school environment go as smoothly as possible.
It was during an information and networking activity, organized for those working with children aged 0 to 5, that TREM launched its new tools “Let’s open the doors of school together”. In total, eight themes are covered, each accompanied by a simplified information sheet. The themes are separated into two categories, namely what children should generally be able to do or know to facilitate their entry into kindergarten, and what is not necessary and which will instead be worked on by the school.
“To implement our tool design, we had the chance to work with exceptional partners,” said Méliza Lottinville, project manager at TREM. We present tools that are representative of people’s reality, simple to understand and which capture parents’ attention. We have also created tools that respect different environments. In short, we want to demystify what is necessary or not necessary before starting kindergarten. »
TREM was able to count on the contribution of community environments, early childhood centers and school environments, with whom it collaborates in order to implement actions that meet the needs identified in the region, to develop and design said tools. “Knowing our children’s vulnerabilities gives us the chance to establish the best strategies to help them succeed. At TREM, we will continue to join forces and efforts with those of other organizations to promote equal opportunities and the development of the full potential of our children,” said Mélanie Chandonnet, general director at TREM. .
“The tools we are launching on school transitions will help parents on what to do and what not to do when my child starts kindergarten. Sometimes there are several myths surrounding the subject. Does my child need to know how to count, does he need to know how to tie his shoes or does he need to know how to go to the bathroom? It can put pressure on us as parents so we offer tools that demystify all that. »
A worrying portrait for Mauricie
The vice-president and representative of the municipal sector at TREM, Nancy Mignault, took the opportunity to mention that the most recent “Quebec survey on child development” in kindergarten paints a poor portrait of Mauricie at this time. which concerns the areas of development of our little ones.
“In Mauricie, we don’t look good,” she testified. The vulnerability of our children is increasing in all areas of development covered by the survey. It is therefore our duty now to take note of this data, roll up our sleeves and row together in the same direction to help our little ones. The survey, carried out in 2022, identified an increase in the vulnerability of our 5-year-old kindergarten children in all areas of development affected by the survey, including two which have significantly higher proportions than the rest of Quebec, namely social skills and cognitive and language development. »
“In figures, in terms of the proportion of vulnerable children in the area of social skills, it increased from 9.3% in 2017 to 12.2% in 2022, which places us among the regions with a proportion significantly higher number of vulnerable children in this area than the rest of the province. As for the area of cognitive and language development, the proportion of our vulnerable children in this area increased from 12.7% in 2017. This is why it is our duty to take note of this data and roll up our sleeves for our little ones,” she concluded.
