Christoph Hauck, manager at toolmaker and mold builder MBFZ Toolcraft, received the Big Five Award on the first day of Rapid.Tech 3D. In his speech he ‘passed on’ the award directly to his team, because according to him where Toolcraft stands is the result of teamwork.

The Big Five Award has been awarded for several years by the Institut für werkzeuglose Fertigung und die Fachhochschule Aachen to a person who has long been committed to the industrial implementation of metal printing. Christoph Hauck has been doing this since 2012 – or even earlier – at the German supplier Toolcraft, one of ASML’s suppliers.

10 million euro turnover from AM business

“This would not have been possible without my employees,” says Christoph Hauck, who was inspired by additive manufacturing in 2005 through a book by Professor Andreas Gebhardt of the Fachhochschule Aachen regarding AM. The German supplier now has 12 powder-bed metal printers and 2 DED metal printers, a new technology that the company is exploring. Of the 70 million euro turnover that Toolcraft books, 10 million now comes from AM activities. “Additive manufacturing is a nice leg under the company,” says Hauck.

Combination AM with machining

The power of Toolcraft in his view is the way in which additive manufacturing has been integrated into machining, the core competence of the supplier. His team knows what mechanical post-processing is still required and knows how to link this seamlessly to additive production. In machining, Toolcraft uses adaptive control software that adapts programs to the oversize that varies with AM parts. The German company has also developed technology to remove the support. The AM processes have meanwhile been certified for several sectors.
