Too many calories, too fat… Should we stop eating tacos?

A study by the CLCV association warns of the poor nutritional balance of “French tacos”. However, this does not mean that you should never eat it once more: dieticians and nutritionists advise occasional consumption with less fatty ingredients.

Is this the end of tacos? The association Consumption housing living environment (CLCV) warns of the poor nutritional balance of “French tacos” which have imposed themselves in France in recent years, in a study published this Thursday. After analyzing different tacos from five brands, CLCV deduces that their calorie intake is “excessive”.

“They provide an average of 1600 calories, or 60% of the energy intake recommended for a day for a 14-year-old teenager,” says the association in a press release.

Size XL tacos represent an average of 2,300 calories, according to the CLCV. For comparison, a Big Mac from McDonald’s represents 504 calories and a medium fries 328 calories, according to the channel. The consumer defense association also points to the excessive presence of fat and salt in tacos and asks professionals to “improve the nutritional quality of their menus”.

“It’s okay” to eat it from time to time

Does that mean you shouldn’t eat tacos anymore? Laura Le Meur, dietician-nutritionist in Saint-Jean-de-Védas, in the Hérault, advises once morest such a restriction: “the more you will be frustrated, the more you risk cracking. You should not feel guilty because you have eaten a tacos, it does not matter”, she judges with BFMTV.

She simply invites to “pay attention to the frequency and of course the quantity so that all this remains reasonable”.

“Nothing casual is serious,” says dietitian Ariane Grumbach to BFMTV.com.

Nutritionist Arnaud Cocaul is more decided: he says that you must “absolutely avoid this kind of food”, which is “ultra-processed junk food”. “Once a month, for a student, it’s not a danger, but I would rather advise him a ham and butter,” he told BFMTV.com.

The nutritionist practitioner attached to the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital in Paris also notes that it is a dish that “does not stick to the body, which leads to the risk of snacking”, because “the proteins are of poor quality and therefore not satisfying”.

Avoid “accumulating” fat

Ariane Grumbach believes that “young people are looking for fun and low prices” in this tacos that have nothing to do with mexican. The key to reducing its consumption would be “food education” which would notably develop a “desire to eat healthy things”.

In the meantime, she recommends eating “junk food” type products such as tacos, pizzas or hamburgers once or twice a week, but she stresses that “it depends on what you eat on the side”. The idea is not to “cumulate”: there’s no point in restricting yourself to tacos if you think it allows you to eat pizza every day.

“We know that tacos are fatty, but you can choose your fat and not multiply it with fries, two sauces and fried or breaded meat”, offered in the form of cordon-bleu for example, adds Ariane Grumbach.

In a press release, the CLCV also encourages “consumers to eat tacos occasionally, to favor sizes M or L, to choose a single sauce and to avoid the supplements offered (fries, sauces, cheese, etc.). It also asks the brands that market them to “eliminate tacos that are too high in calories (XL sizes)” to “offer only one choice of sauce, which seems more than enough”.

Doctor Cocaul would like the signs that sell tacos to display the nutriscore, because he thinks that people are “unaware” of the “calorie bomb” they represent.
