High serum sodium increases the risk of respiratory disease and heart disease. A serum sodium level above 142 increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, coronary artery disease, lung disease, diabetes, and dementia. Researchers also say that if serum sodium is maintained at a level of 138-140, the risk of kidney diseases is low.
