This is one of those speeches that complicates – in the excellent sense of the term – the character of the athlete. Not just a dribbler who takes his pesos and checks the shots expected of him (hello Tyler Herro). A man finds himself. Everywhere, all the time. And talking regarding it honors him.
Tony Snell s’est “always felt different”.
For the broadcast « Today » from NBC, the 31-year-old full-back/winger opened up regarding his most recent medical introspection. Last year, Karter Snellher two-year-old son, was diagnosed with autism following his parents noticed he was developmentally delayed. “At 18 months, he still wasn’t talking and he was doing a lot of stimulation movements”, explains Tony Snell. But the Maine Celtics player (G League) very quickly compared his son’s diagnosis. He too has always felt special, “independent growing up” and suffer from communication problems.
“I thought to myself that if Karter had been diagnosed, I think I would be too. It gave me the courage to go get checked out. […] I was not surprised, because I always felt different. I was just relieved, I was like, “Ah, that’s why I’m like this”. It gave meaning to my life, to everything that happened in my life. It was like everything lit up, like I was putting on 3D glasses”
– Tony Snell, for the show « Today » from NBC
Pour the clinic mayoAmerican University Hospital and Research Federation, the autism spectrum is characterized by “a condition related to brain development that impacts the way a person perceives and socializes with others, causing problems with social interaction and communication.” All this time Tony Snell has grown and developed as a man unaware of his disability. The moments of doubt and questioning – but also of isolation – must have been legion. Speaking is awesome.
