Tony Khan reveals the conditions imposed by AEW on William Regal after his release

One of the most discussed topics in recent days has been, without a doubt, the departure of William Regal of AEW. His departure has been confirmed today by Tony Khanwho noted that the British legend had requested his release so that he might return to WWEwhere his son (Charlie Dempsey) currently plays.

Rumors flared when Regal appeared on one of the promotional videos of Survivor Series: WarGames, since the British was one of the promoters of this type of combat during his stay in NXT, where he held the role of general manager of the brand. Something that might have remained a mere tribute, finally ended up being a nod to what was to come.

Nevertheless, Regal’s “appearance” in the WWE PLE caught Tony Khan by surprise, as he himself confirmed in the press conference prior to ROH Final Battle 2022 granted to the media. Below we leave you with his statements in this regard, transcript courtesy of Fightful:

On AEW’s conditions for William Regal once he returns to WWE

“Under the agreement, I think following this year, (Regal) might come back and train (in WWE), but I think he won’t be able to appear on screen for the next year. I wouldn’t expect to see it on TV next year..

Honestly, given the nature of the situation and how accommodating we were being, I was really surprised by the tweet with the video where he appeared, especially since he was still with us and was part of the shows. We still talk regarding him on the show, like on the show last week. First of all, he continues to be an important part of our program.

I was a bit surprised by the video on Triple H’s Twitter account, and given how complacent we were being with the whole thing, I didn’t expect to see something like this, but whatever. The important thing is that it is a situation that will be resolved and he will be able to be there and train and work with his son. and everything that is also important to him. (Regal) accepted and agreed that it is a release that does not allow him to appear on television next year.”

The absence of FTR

However, the press conference gave many topics to discuss, most of them focused, of course, on ROH and the PPV next Saturday. Khan answered several questions from the journalists present. One of them wondered why FTR, current Tag Team Champions of the brand, were hardly being used, to which Tony replied that it is bad luck, since many plans and matches were scrapped due to other people’s injuries, specifically citing CM Punk’s foot injury.

On the creative teams of AEW and ROH

Khan noted that currently the creative teams of AEW and ROH are independent of each other, although they usually collaborate on a recurring basis. Tony confirmed that he leads both teams and that, despite these collaborations, some creatives work exclusively for a single brand.

On the AEW Rampage shows and ROH’s TV exposure

Tony Khan intends to have good billboards for the AEW Rampage shows. In addition, he acknowledged having tried to limit ROH’s exposure on AEW television programming following hearing recent criticism on the subject.
