A group of college students want to spend a weekend in a cabin in the woods. Once there, they read a summoning from a diary that causes zombies to rise and kill the group one by one.
As cliché as this plot sounds, it contains a number of twists that turn the conventions of the horror genre on their head, which we do not want to spoil here.
Humorous Reckoning with the Horror Genre
You would not be misguided if the brief plot description makes you think of the horror classic “Evil Dead” from 1981. But that is exactly what the film aims for.
“The Cabin in the Woods” is well aware of the peculiarities of horror films and plays with them, including a series of direct references to other genre representatives. Thus, the film fits into the sub-genre of “meta-horror,” alongside films like the “Scream” series.
Therefore, the film is best suited for all horror movie fans and is regarded in genre circles as a “must watch.”
