England: Italian Tonali joins Newcastle

English club Newcastle announced on Monday the signing of AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali for five seasons in exchange for the biggest transfer fee for an Italian player.

The transfer fee for the 23-year-old (14 caps) would be €64m, with bonuses that might take him up to almost €70m, well beyond the €57m paid by Chelsea in 2018 to bring Jorginho from Napoli.

Tonali played in the 12 C1 matches for the Rossoneri, who reached the semi-finals last year. He will return to this competition with Newcastle, who finished 4th last season and qualified for the first time in 20 years for the most prestigious of European competitions.

… and Gerrard new coach of Al-Ettifaq

Iconic former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is the latest star of European football to join Saudi Arabia where he was made official on Monday as the new head coach of Al-Ettifaq.

The 43-year-old English technician had been without a club since his dismissal by Aston Villa in October. Gerrard, who had previously declined an offer from a Gulf state, finally gave in to the Saudi sirens.

Al-Ettifaq finished seventh out of 16 clubs in the Saudi Pro League last season.

M’Vila leaves Olympiakos

Former French international Yann M’Vila leaves Olympiakos and finds himself free of any contract. The defensive midfielder arrived in Piraeus in September 2020, winning two Greek league titles in 2021 and 2022, his first two club trophies.

He wore the red and white jersey 140 times, his second highest total following Rennes, for eight goals and seven assists.

Trained at Stade Rennais and notably worked for Inter Milan, Sunderland and Rubin Kazan, the 33-year-old player with 22 caps in blue between 2010 and 2012 quickly established himself in the midfield of the most successful club in Greece.
