The political leader Tomás Guanipa denounced on Thursday, September 26, that his brother, Pedro Guanipa, was detained in Venezuela by state security officials when he was preparing to stamp his passport to travel to Bogotá, Colombia.

The spokesperson warned that until now his family and lawyers do not know his whereabouts.

His relatives have also not mentioned which airport he was detained at or whether he was alone or accompanied, nor which security agency carried out the arrest.

Pedro Guanipa’s wife, Caroll Figueredo, also denounced her husband’s arrest and demanded his immediate release.

Pedro Guanipa serves as vice president of organization of the Primero Justicia party in the state of Zulia and is the brother of the political leader Juan Pablo Guanipa.

The non-governmental organization (NGO) Foro Penal reported that in Venezuela there are 1,867 political prisoners. Of this total, between July 29 and September 23, 1,723 arrests were carried out in the post-election context.

The majority of those detained are adults and 68 are adolescents between 14 and 17 years of age. Regarding gender, 1,637 are men and 230 women.

Likewise, 1,708 of the political prisoners are civilians, while 159 served as soldiers.

The NGO detailed, in a publication on its social networks on September 26, that since the week of September 16, 34 imprisonments and one release were carried out. In addition, 151 of those arrested were sentenced, while 1,716 remain without precautionary measures.

The Fact-Finding Mission on Venezuela of the United Nations (UN) presented on Friday, September 20, before the Human Rights Council your new reportin which he exposes the “serious violations of human rights” in the country.

During the twentieth meeting of the UN Council session, the president of the mission, Marta Valiñas, warned about the increase in repression during the context of the July 28 elections in Venezuela.

Valiñas maintained that the “repressive machinery” of the Venezuelan State continues to commit serious human rights violations and aggravated crimes in the last year, especially since the presidential elections.

“The numerous events recorded during the period before the elections confirmed that we were facing a reactivation of this repressive machinery (…). The victims and the population in general are helpless in the face of the arbitrary exercise of power,” he noted.

The independent UN mission documented that 121 people were detained for offering their services at opposition campaign events before the July 28 elections.

“The situation in Venezuela, especially since July 28, has become one of the most acute human rights crises in the country’s recent history. Serious human rights violations and crimes continue to be committed while we present our report,” Valiñas warned.
