Tom Hanks Denounces AI-Generated Dental Plan Ad: Legal and Ethical Concerns

American actor Tom Hanks took to Instagram on Sunday to denounce an advertisement for a dental care plan which allegedly used his image without his knowledge, generating it from A to Z by artificial intelligence.

“Attention!! There’s a video promoting a dental plan with an AI version of me. I have nothing to do with it,” he said on Sunday in his post to his 9.5 million followers on Instagram, accompanying an image of himself with a younger appearance.

This is not the first time the Hollywood actor has reportedly raised concerns regarding artificial intelligence, although he has previously endorsed the process in a few of his films, including “The Polar Express ” in 2004 and “A Man Called Otto” in 2022, which would feature passages from the computer-generated actor, according to “The Guardian”.

“I can tell you that there are ongoing discussions at every guild, every agency and every law firm to determine the legal ramifications of my face and voice – and those of everyone else – being our intellectual property,” he confided in a podcast last April, shortly before the Hollywood writers’ strike, according to the British media.

Unsurprisingly given the rapid technological advances, the actor pointed out the realism of images generated by artificial intelligence which make them difficult to differentiate from reality.

“I might get hit by a bus tomorrow, and that’s it, but the performances can go on and on. […] And it will have a certain degree of realistic quality. It is certainly an artistic challenge, but it is also a legal challenge,” he continued, according to “The Guardian”.
