The Dutchman anticipated his retirement from professional cycling and will not compete again for the remainder of the season. The Jumbo-Visma cyclist had announced last June that this would be his last campaign, but finally the Clásica San Sebastián was his last appearance.

“I have decided to leave professional cycling with immediate effect. About two months ago I announced that I would be retiring as a professional cyclist at the end of the year. Last spring, despite my love for the bike, I noticed that things were not going the way I wanted. I felt that I was ready for a new stage in my life. But I still had one project on my wish list to finish my career strong: the World Championships in Australia. I wanted to approach that road to the World Championships the same way I did to the Tokyo Olympics. With a sense of freedom, on my terms, with the support of the team and with my intrinsic motivation as the main fuel. That’s what brought the joy of riding a bike back to me back then.”Dumoulin reported during this Monday.

However, a month before the World Cup, the native of Maastricht said enough. “I can not anymore. The tank is empty, the legs feel heavy, and the workouts are not working as expected. I need to put in a good performance and have a good feeling in the World Championship.”said Tom, who had a fall during training last month that took a toll on him physically. Thus, he had to stop his efforts and deal with another disappointment.

“It was too much. Although the farewell did not turn out as expected, I look back on my career with incredible pride. I worked hard for it, had a lot of passion and pleasure for many years, and gave brilliant performances. I will never forget that. Now it’s time to enjoy other things and be there for the people I love. Many thanks to my team and everyone who supported me during my fantastic career. And a special thanks to my wife, who supported me all these years”concluded Dumoulin, who hangs up the bicycle at the age of 31.

Professional between 2011 and 2022, in his career he won the Giro d’Italia and the World Time Trial Championship in 2017. He achieved stage victories in the three grand tours and was runner-up in the 2018 Tour de France, surpassed by Geraint Thomas.
