Asuncion, IP Agency.- The increase in the cost of the toll on the Paraguay-Paraná waterway, announced by Argentina, mainly affects overseas ships and not Paraguayan convoys, said the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Javier Giménez, on Friday.
This week, it was announced that the Argentine Government had increased the rates for international cargo through the Paraguay-Paraná waterway, going from USD 3.06 to USD 4.98 per Net Registered Ton (NRT).
In this regard, the Minister of Industry and Commerce of Paraguay clarified that the measure does not affect Paraguayan vessels as much, as they do not use this stretch in question.
“This increase is from Santa Fe to the end of the waterway, which is the last stretch and does not affect our trade as much,” said the minister.
He explained that the barges that travel from Paraguay at some point on the waterway unload or transfer large vessels, and that the port of Rosario, in the Argentine province of Santa Fe, is one of the main points for this operation.
“This will have a greater impact on overseas vessels that transit along that section of the river, from Santa Fe downstream,” he added.
The measure for international cargo will come into effect from August 2024, while local cargo will begin in September, they announced in Argentina.
