When Mr. Sakai was elected, he bowed his head several times at his office in Shibasaki-cho, the same city, and shook hands with his supporters. “For four years, I have believed in the citizens.

In the midst of a virtual three-way battle, Mr. Sakai, former leader of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, who served five terms as a member of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly, took the lead, taking advantage of his high name recognition. In the previous mayoral election in 2019, he avenged his defeat by a margin of 257 votes to the incumbent, who was recommended by the LDP.

During the election campaign, in addition to appealing for municipal reforms and child-rearing support, he also indicated that he would conduct an independent survey of the city’s own PFAS (PFAS), a hazardous substance found in high concentrations in the city’s groundwater.

Mr. Shimizu faced a tough fight as Komeito decided to vote on its own while the election cooperation between the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito in Tokyo was temporarily broken. In the final stage, there were moves to restore relations in preparation for the next House of Representatives election, but this did not lead to a full-fledged revival of election cooperation in the mayoral election.

Ito was recommended by the Tokyo Citizens First Party, a regional political party to which Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike serves as a special adviser. He caught up with the full support of the party, but fell short.
