Gaien area where redevelopment is planned

On the 27th, there was a deliberation on the environmental impact assessment (assessment) of the Tokyo metropolitan government on the redevelopment of Tokyo’s Meiji Jingu Gaien area. Regarding the environmental assessment report, the contents of which are questionable by the ICOMOS Japan National Committee, Mitsui Fudosan, the representative of the business operator, said, “There are no errors or falsehoods in the content, and the impact of redevelopment on the environment cannot be evaluated or predicted. There will be no change,” he argued. However, he acknowledged that “there were insufficient explanations and expressions that tended to cause misunderstandings,” and the committee members also complained that the level was “low.”

ICOMOS pointed out a total of 58 items. He calls for a redo of the evaluation itself, which he finds erroneous and inadequate. On this day and next time, the operators will explain all the points raised, and the council will consider the response.

Aside from ICOMOS’s remarks, members of the committee continued to demand information disclosure and accountability. There was also criticism of the lack of response to a group of parents in Tokyo’s Minami-Aoyama elementary school requesting information sessions.

The company said it would “take it seriously” in response to each complaint and indication, but did not mention its own fault, stating that there were “no mistakes or falsehoods” in the statement following the meeting. Conversely, some of ICOMOS’ remarks included “contrary to the facts.”

On the other hand, Mikiko Ishikawa, director of ICOMOS, argued once morest the business operators at a press conference. She reiterated her request to attend the council, which she had previously requested. (Tomoyuki Morimoto)
