The American clown and entertainer Jango Edwards died on August 4th in Barcelona at the age of 73 as a result of cancer. Edwards was a co-founder of the “Nouveau Clown” movement and also became known in Austria – initially through stage appearances at street theater and clown festivals, then in the Roncalli Circus or in the comedy show “Tohuwabohu” on ORF.
The son of European emigrants with family roots in Ireland, England and Eastern Europe, he was born Stanley Ted Edwards in Detroit, USA in 1950. After studying philosophy and religion, he became a clown and comedian and had great success in France and England with his physical, sometimes rough performances solo or with his group “Friends Road Show”.
When he was seen in June 2011 in Vienna’s cabaret Simpl with his program “Classics”, the “King of Fools” showed a selection of his best sketches such as the pantomime number “The Weazer” or the beer orgy “Six Pack”. In December 2012 he was awarded the Golden Medal of Merit of the State of Vienna in the federal capital. In February 2023, the entertainer, who was already in poor health, said goodbye to his audience at the Circus and Clown Museum in Vienna.
