Togo / Public roads in Avedji: Why is the town hall reluctant to release occupied roads behind the market?

One of the buildings blocking the way behind the market

Is it possible that public roads that should be open to user traffic are deliberately spared for reasons that we refuse to explain? Behind the new market located in the Avedji district, an area inhabited by natives resists the descent of the agents of the town hall. A situation that does not seem to worry the managers of the said municipality.

In December 2022, a building located in the same district, more precisely at the Limousine crossroads, was demolished without any other form of trial. And when we went to the news, Mr. Dzanyi Sedina, head of the technical services division who apparently masters the plans of his area of intervention, assured us that the said construction was erected in the 14m street. The operation took place at dawn.

But it happens that in this same neighborhood where other houses are built in other streets, and a mini-forest prevents the free movement of users, the agent of the town hall hardly seems to remember that such a situation exists.

Indeed, at the time of the special delegations, operations to free public roads had been carried out with an iron fist by certain mayors. In an absence of proven sentimentality. And, with no other consideration than seeing the access roads open to the people, heavy machinery had razed many houses throughout the capital. The Avedji district was no exception.

However, there is a place that oddly survived the demolition operations. Behind the new Avédji market, an area extending over nearly two hectares seems to have no access to vehicles. Because the access roads are either occupied by mud constructions for the most part, or by a mini-forest which local residents say would house a fetish dear to the natives who would be from Aflao.

Residents complained of a situation of double standards. Because their homes had been destroyed by the president of the Special Delegation, who is now the mayor of the municipality of Golfe 5, these residents do not understand why the same treatment that was applied to them does not apply in this part of the neighborhood. “We have the impression that it is because a question of common origin would bind those who order the demolitions, and the inhabitants of this part of the district, that nothing has been done to date”, confided a resident. .

To get to the bottom of it, we spoke with the head of technical services, Dzanyi Sedina Yaovi. We asked him if it was the cadastre that prohibited the area behind the Avedji market from being cleared to allow the circulation of users, especially since over an area of 200 m by 80 m, there is no there are no roads crossing it.

Without answer, we insisted the next day, with in support of our request some images of the dead ends while these ways extend beyond the places concerned. “It would be useful for a site visit to be made,” he simply replied.

Would the mayor of the said commune ignore this reality? In this case, the opportunity is offered to him to rectify the situation and show impartiality. Because, in the same way that other roads have been opened to traffic in a state of mind, the populations of Avédji are waiting for those located behind the Avedji market to be opened as well.
