(Agence Ecofin) – Created in 1999, the ATU aims to promote the rapid development of ICTs in Africa in order to achieve universal access and total connectivity between the countries of the continent. The organization has 51 member states and 61 associate members, including telecom operators.
Togo will become a full member of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU), leaving the observer status it has held until then. This stems from the adoption by deputies of a bill proposed by the government to this effect, on Friday 30 June.
Togo takes a major step in the field of telecommunications by joining the African Telecommunications Union for an era of enhanced connectivity.

According to Cina Lawson, Minister of the Digital Economy and Digital Transformation, membership of the ATU gives Togo the right to seek the support of the organization to assert its positions or defend its interests within the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The country can also apply for positions within the ATU and the ITU and more easily ensure compliance with the rules relating to the broadcasting of radio programs from other countries on its territory.
This initiative is part of the Togolese authorities’ commitment to regional integration and the development of telecommunications in Africa in a context of accelerated digital transformation. Togo recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Ghana to implement free roaming in accordance with the guidelines of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
« Togo’s membership of the African Telecommunications Union also paves the way for increased cooperation with other African countries, allowing exchanges of expertise and good practices to promote the sustainable development of the telecommunications sector on the continent. The country is now positioning itself as a key player in the field of telecommunications in Africa, ready to fully exploit the advantages of connectivity and technological innovation to stimulate economic and social development.“, can we read in a press release from the Togolese National Assembly.
