Tsiaras to representatives of breeders: With seriousness and responsibility, all of us together, we will deal with smallpox as we did with the plague
The Minister of Rural Development and Food, Kostas Tsiaras, had a wide meeting with representatives of livestock associations, associations and cooperatives from all over the country, on the occasion of the smallpox problem.
Addressing the representatives of the livestock world, the Minister emphasized that responsibility and seriousness is needed from everyone to deal with this zoonosis, in a manner similar to that of the plague of small ruminants. “I look forward to your assistance and your cooperation”, emphasized Mr. Tsiaras, because, as he said, the goal is common and it is none other than to limit the impact on our livestock.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications explained the feasibility of the measures taken, which are part of a strategic plan that includes two strands: First, increased compensation to €250 for thoroughbreds and €220 for half-breeds, and second, free replacement of the lost livestock, according to the standards of Measure 5.2 for Thessaly. At the same time, the minister said that a way to support the breeders through animal feed is being considered, since there are areas, such as those of Tyrnavos in Thessaly, which are “closed” from July 11, 2024, while there was a discussion about the reasons why the vaccination solution was not qualified .
The meeting also raised general issues related to the strengthening of animal husbandry and exports to third countries, the understaffing of the region in veterinarians, spatial planning and land uses, equalization aids as well as a number of other issues related to support of animal husbandry, but also the protection of water resources.
Mr. Tsiaras emphasized that he believes that Greek animal husbandry has enormous potential if the unique possibilities offered by our country are properly exploited and if the breeders strengthen their knowledge through additional training on the new possibilities offered by new technologies. “Together we can achieve a lot,” he said.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food Christos Kellas, the Secretary General of Rural Development and Food Giorgos Stratakos, the General Director of the Veterinary Service of the HYPAAT Thomas Alexandropoulos and representatives from ETHEAS and fifteen Unions, Cooperatives and Associations from all over Greece.
