Toddler Sidra (4) died as a result of an accident in a gym: “We are devastated” | Instagram VTM NEWS

After a fight of almost five days, little Sidra Atmane (4) from Burcht lost the battle. The toddler became trapped in a climbing frame during a gymnastics exercise at school on Friday. Sidra suffocated and had a heart attack. She was resuscitated by the teachers, but has now died as a result.

The news of her death has just been confirmed by Sidra’s family. “We are devastated,” they said in an initial response. Sidra’s situation has remained critical in recent days. Sidra had been in a coma since the tragic accident at school. “Last weekend she also had two epilepsy attacks,” says the family. “She was given heavy medication and a brain scan was carried out on Monday. Normally this would not be done until Tuesday. However, it was brought forward due to Sidra’s high blood pressure and rapid heartbeat. Unfortunately, the results did not bode well. The scan showed brain damage and the doctors feared a brain hemorrhage…”

The intention is to transfer her to Morocco as soon as possible where she will be buried

Parents of Sidra

Sidra’s parents have kept vigil almost continuously at their daughter’s sick bed in recent days. The toddler died in the late followingnoon. The parents are now being cared for by relatives. “We are now seeking comfort from each other to deal with this immense sadness,” says Nabila Madrouni, Sidra’s aunt. “The intention is to transfer her to Morocco as soon as possible where she will be buried.”

Waiting for medical examiner’s report

The Sint-Martinus school in Burcht, where the accident happened, is also responding to the death of little Sidra. “This is unreal, a hammer blow,” responds director Wim Van Ranst. “The teachers came to school today to process this together. Nobody understands how it got to this point. We will now first give the parents time in peace and serenity to process this immense grief. We then hope to gain more clarity with them regarding the medical aspect once the medical examiner has presented his findings. After all, many questions still need to be answered before the grieving process can begin in peace.”
