The report studied the well-being index of women aged 25 to 34 from each generation of American women and compiled some data for adolescent girls aged 15 to 19.

Indeed, this study reveals that women born between 1981 and 1999, broadly categorized as millennials, experienced the first decrease in the well-being index and an increase in the rate of maternal mortality, suicide and femicide.

The number of deaths linked to pregnancy among women aged 25 to 34 reaches 30.4 per 100,000 births, while this figure stands at 21 per 100,000 among the silent generation, born during the Second World War, at the same time. age.

These rates rise to 7.5 for the Baby Boomer generation and 9.2 for the Generation X.

Overall, the mortality rate among women aged 25 to 34 jumped by almost 40% between 2019 and 2021 alone; this increase might be attributed to the rise in violent crime, according to the report.

The year 2020 saw the largest annual increase in the femicide rate in modern history, at 30%, in the United States.

Millennials are also the first to experience an increase in suicide rates in the 25 to 34 age group, while Generation Z has the highest rate of teen suicide among 15 to 19 year olds. years which reaches 5.1 per 100,000, compared to 3.1 per 100,000 among millennials.

The rate of suicide and femicide is even higher among women of color and the LGBTQIA+ community, the report indicates.

“It’s not regarding whether today’s young women are working hard enough or trying to improve their lives,” said Sara Srygley, a research analyst on the report.

“They are pursuing higher education. They are moving into more competitive fields such as STEM and entrepreneurship. They chose what they believed would lead to a better life. Despite their best efforts, these challenges are very real,” she added.

The report defines Generation Z as those born in 2000 or later, millennials born between 1981 and 1999, Generation X born between 1965 and 1980, baby boomers born between 1946 and 1964 and the Silent Generation born between 1928 and 1945.
