Negotiations aimed at brokering a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip will resume in Cairo on Sunday. This was revealed by the Egyptian media Al-Qaheradays following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave the green light to new talks.

“Egyptian security sources confirmed to Al-Qahera News resumption of negotiations on a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Egyptian capital Cairo tomorrow,” the channel’s anchor, who is close to the country’s intelligence agency, said in a broadcast on Saturday. (3/30)

Egypt, Qatar and Israel’s main ally, the United States, have mediated previous rounds of talks, but no agreement might be reached. The mediators had hoped to reach a ceasefire before the start of Ramadan, but progress has stalled. Until the middle of Ramadan, fighting was still going on.

However, on Friday (29/3), Netanyahu agreed to a new round of ceasefire negotiations to be held in Doha and Cairo. The Israeli prime minister reportedly spoke with Mossad chief David Barnea regarding the talks, but did not elaborate on whether Barnea would travel to the two cities.

Reports of new talks in Cairo emerged as protesters in Israel’s biggest city blocked a main road on Saturday following demonstrations calling for the release of hostages held in Gaza and criticizing the government’s handling of the war. (AFP/M-3)
