Tobogganing: double success for German women

Two double victories at the European Championships: The German female lugers did the same as the men and won gold and silver at the European Championships in Sigulda. Anna Berreiter prevailed in an extremely close race on Sunday in front of Dajana Eitberger. After the surprising Olympic silver medal in Beijing a year ago, it was the next highlight in the 23-year-old’s young career.

At the dress rehearsal for the home World Championships in Oberhof in two weeks, the top four were only separated by 42 thousandths of a second: Latvian Elina Vitola took third place, five thousandths behind was the German junior Merle Fräbel.

The men had already won gold and silver on Saturday, winner Max Langenhan and record world champion Felix Loch climbed to the top following catching up in the second run. The doubles Tobias Wendl/Tobias Arlt had previously won the European title, Jessica Degenhardt/Cheyenne Rosenthal took bronze in the women’s event. It was the first European Championship title for both Berreiter and Langenhan.

As in every winter, the European Championship races were also included in the World Cup rankings, with the women now three Germans are ahead: Eitberger (381 points) leads ahead of world champion Julia Taubitz (337), who came eighth in Sigulda, and Berreiter (330). In the men’s category, Loch (426) moved closer to Italy’s Dominik Fischnaller (520) in second place. sid
