While winter sports fans in Europe were enjoying their night’s sleep, South Tyrol’s toboggan aces Dominik Fischnaller, Andrea Vötter and Marion Oberhofer landed a coup in American Park City that has never been seen together on this scale.

The exceptional talent from Meransen and the two-seater duo left the world’s best artificial track lugers behind and all three were crowned World Cup winners – and that within a few hours. Andrea Voetter and Marion Oberhofer even took the lead in the overall World Cup.

The experienced Völser and the 22-year-old Rodeneck celebrated their second consecutive victory in the newly introduced women’s doubles competition following they were allowed to cheer in Whistler last week. The two have thus climbed onto the podium in all four races of the season. The consequence? First place in the overall World Cup!

Vötter’s and Oberhofer’s performance in the USA was a true demonstration of power, as they set the undisputed best time in both races, relegating Jessica Degenhardt and Cheyenne Rosenthal (Germany) to second place by a clear margin. Third were Caitlin Nash and Natalie Corless (Canada).

Significantly more thrill was at Dominik Fischnaller required. With a furious race to catch up, he snagged his eighth World Cup victory and at the same time the 40th podium finish of his career. It was his first success in almost three years. In the overall World Cup, Fischnaller is closing in on the leading Austrian Wolfgang Kiendl, who was not on the podium for the first time this season.

The 29-year-old Olympic bronze medalist whipped up a perfect second run down the Park City ice track to jump from third to first place with the all-time best time of the day. The third-place finisher in the first round, the German veteran Felix Loch (+0.185 seconds), and Austria’s Olympic champion from 2018, David Gleirscher (+0.204), were left behind. The surprising half-time leader Jozef Ninis from Slovakia slipped back to eighth place in the final. The young South Tyroleans Leon Felderer and Lukas Gufler finished 13th and 16th.

Two doubles in the top ten

Meanwhile, the doubles achieved their best result of the season Emanuel Rieder/Simon Kainzwaldner, who finished sixth in the second win of the season for the German duo Toni Eggert/Sascha Benecken. Ludwig Rieder/Patrick Rastner also made it into the top ten in tenth place while Ivan Nagler/Fabian Malleier had to settle for 16th place following a fall.

The World Cup program for natural track lugers overseas will continue late on Saturday evening with the women’s singles competition and the sprint races.
