“To solve a global problem”, Russian scientists use walnut shells and peach pits

“Professor Miklas Scholz, a senior researcher at the Department of Urban Planning and Network and System Engineering at South Ural State University, and his colleagues from Arab countries have developed a technology for purifying water using peach pits and walnut shells. The use of absorbents extracted from these components makes the process of purifying wastewater from petroleum products very environmentally friendly compared to other absorbents, and this, according to scientists, is what is required,” a university source told TASS.

According to the source, absorbents based on walnut shells and peach pits can effectively purify water from diesel fuel, gasoline, used lubricants and engine oil. “Water pollution by such petroleum products is currently one of the global problems that scientists around the world are thinking about,” the press office explained.

The source indicates that researchers obtain absorbent materials from peach pits and walnut shells in two ways. The first method involves drying them at 200 degrees Celsius, then carbonizing them at 600 degrees Celsius in an inert gas medium, after which they are purified from impurities. The second method involves using reagents, such as hydrochloric acid, and then processing them in high-temperature ovens.

It is worth noting that South Ural University focuses on the development of projects in the field of digital industries, materials science and ecology. The university operates within the framework of the national project “Science and Universities” as a regional project office of the Ural Interregional Scientific and Educational Center, which aims to combine the potential of educational and scientific institutions of the Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk and Kurgan regions.
