The importance of exercising freedom of expression without restrictions was the main topic discussed at a meeting between the majority of Prensa Libre’s opinion columnists, executives and members of the Board of Directors of this newspaper.
The pleasant meeting took place last Wednesday, August 21, within the framework of the 73rd anniversary of Prensa Libre and the relaunch of the Opinion section of this media outlet.
As part of its constant renewal and evolution, Prensa Libre has strengthened its Opinion section with the incorporation of nine leaders from various business, social and academic sectors with a long track record in their respective fields. They joined the already recognized group of columnists with whom 39 different firms are completed that will offer our audience a comprehensive view of the country and the world every day.
The activity aimed to exchange ideas between the columnists and the representatives and directors of this media, regarding the importance of strengthening spaces for the exposition of ideas, with varied and relevant opinions that provide perspective on different topics of national and international reality, with responsible arguments.
Freedom of expression
“Being a columnist for Prensa Libre is a pride and a privilege; We must preserve freedom, especially freedom of expression; if we want a real democracy, we must listen, give our opinion and respect that of others.“, said one of the new columnists, María del Carmen Aceña, vice president of the Center for Economic Research (Cien) and former minister of education.
Roberto Ardón, lawyer, writer and high-ranking executive in the private sector said: “Freedom of expression and thought are the most evident demonstrations of freedom in a society; “Informing freedom and helping to form public opinion in freedom is invaluable.”
Similar expressions were heard from the doctor in economics, Fritz Thomas, for whom “A column allows you to exercise freedom of expression and be heard” or former ambassador and internationalist Luis Fernando Adrade Falla, who said that opinion columns represent “a right to be able to express oneself responsibly on issues of public interest, with respect for differences.”
Journalist and writer Haroldo Shetemul, highlighted that opinion spaces serve to “express in a critical way what is happening that is important,” a vision similar to that of Christa Walters, executive president of the National Civic Movement, for whom a column “is being able to transmit different ideas” and the opportunity to “build a community by being able to exchange opinions.”ions, as long as they have a background to try to solve the problems we face together”.
The historic meeting included a group photo in which 22 of the columnists representing different business, academic and social sectors can be seen together; the rest could not attend due to prior commitments or because they are traveling.
