The new platform Threads, the rival of Twitter created by Meta (Facebook), attracts a large number of new subscribers. But the highly anticipated new service, which requires an Instagram account for signup, has an intriguing stipulation: Deleting a Threads account requires deleting the Instagram account linked to it.
In an additional privacy policy, Meta explains, “You can deactivate your Threads profile at any time, but your Threads profile can only be deleted by deleting your Instagram account.”
The reason, Meta clarifies on the policy page, is that your Threads and Instagram profiles are one account.
In a post on his Threads account, CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained his vision for the new app: “I think there should be a public conversations app with over a billion people. Twitter had the opportunity to do so, but failed. I hope we will get there”.
On Thursday, Zuckerberg announced that the app had attracted 10 million signups in just seven hours, sharing an emoji that suggests he was blown away by the reception it received. With 10 million registrations, Threads is the fastest growing consumer app.

Update
After receiving user feedback on the policy decision, Instagram manager Adam Mosseri clarified on his Twitter account how account deletion works.
He explains that users can deactivate their Threads account to hide their profile and content, put their profile in private mode, or delete all of their individual posts on Threads without deleting their Instagram account.
However, currently, Threads and Instagram are one and the same account, so deleting one would result in the deletion of the other. The manager adds that the company is “investigating a way to delete your Threads account separately.”
